Oh my spirit was broken years ago
So robynred got me thinking about what Gaster would be like in the Deltarune world AND LET'S EXPLORE THAT IDEA (details subject to change)
[SPOILERS FOR DELTARUNE?]
No war between humans and monsters (that we know of) means he never went through that trauma, and his parents are still alive, which changes his life's trajectory enormously. His parents continue to exert pressure on him to meet their expectations, and as such, they never supported his interests, so Gaster never became a scientist. After failing at the plans they had for him and resigning himself to being a disappointment, he instead leads an aimless, quiet life, nearly wholly unremarkable. With no zest or passion for his current work, he drifts through life in a sleepwalking, unfocused state, constantly lost in daydreams and fantasies about amazing machines and inventions that he’ll never create. He's distracted easily during conversations or... mostly anything, because he doesn't really care about any of it. He collects books about science but doesn’t pursue it seriously - he’s given up on ever being more than he is. Instead of Papyrus’s vanity, he tends more towards Sans’s self-deprecation.
As for the brothers, he never had any cause to be cruel to them, so his relationship with them both is actually fairly normal and supportive. Where did they come from though, if he didn’t make them? That’s the real question, haha. He could have done it the old-fashioned way with another skeleton (preferably male/nb because Deltarune is really lacking in gay right now, since i headcanon 链接 makes it hard for him to communicate anyway if someone doesn’t know sign language.
He has no particular fears or prejudices against humans, although he’s not very good at socializing in general so he can come off as blunt or rude or weird and he’s low-key suspicious of everyone’s intentions. Since they just moved in (possibly to get out from under his parents’ control?), he doesn’t know Alphys, and he doesn’t know Asgore or Toriel either. They’re all strangers to him.
It’s a world without a war, with his family still alive, skeletons flourishing, a peaceful life on the surface, a healthy relationship with Sans and Papyrus, monsters free, a clean conscience, the goat family safe and alive... all of his problems are fixed! And yet... and yet...

人类和怪物间的战争不存在（听说的）就意味着他没有经历过那种痛苦，并且双亲健在，而这些又极大地改变了他的人生轨迹。他的父母一直在给他施加压力以期他能达到他们的期望，由此，他们也就从没支持过他的兴趣，所以Gaster也就没成为一个科学家。在按着他们给他制定的计划执行，认命地成为一个让人失望的人后，他过起了平静的，没有目的的生活。他对他现在的工作没有激情和热情，像梦游一般地精神恍惚地过活着，常常陷于那些他永远也不可能发明出来的奇妙机器和新奇发明的幻想当中。他常常分心，不管是在交谈中还是在……几乎所有事情当中，因为他对它们一点也不关心。他收集了很多关于科学的书，但没有很仔细地钻研——他甚至放弃了成为更好的自己。比起Papyrus的自大，他更倾向于Sans的自我否定。
说到骨兄弟，他从没有理由在他们身上做什么残忍的事，所以他们之间的关系实际上非常正常。那如果他没有做出他们两个的话，他们又是从哪来的呢？好问题，哈哈。也许他是用一种老套的办法和另一个骷髅造出来的（也许是和男骷髅因为Deltarune目前还缺少一些gay要素，而且我脑补的性别对骷髅的生殖来说根本无关紧要），所以他应该有个伴侣，或者他收养了骨兄弟，或者他们真的是他的兄弟，或者他们是他因为某些原因而决定要照顾的表亲，或者……这部分还没想好，哈哈。我前后想了下他现在到底会不会因为某些原因在手上有手洞。他也许会在图书馆工作，或是在学校，或是和Sans一起在商店工作，大部分时间都独自一人。他觉得其他人不会对他要说的话感兴趣，而且如果有人不会手势语的话，他的cipher也会给交流带来麻烦。
他对人类不怀有偏见或是恐惧，尽管他常因为不善于社交而说出一些直白的、粗鲁的或是奇怪的话，而且他对每个人的目的都抱有低调的怀疑。因为他们刚刚搬进来（也许是为了摆脱他父母的控制？），他不认识Alphys，也不认识Asgore和Toriel。他们对于他来说都是陌生人。
这是一个没有战争的世界，他的家人们还活着，骷髅社会兴旺发展，在地表之上和平地生活着，与Sans和Papyrus关系正常，怪物们不受压迫，良心很宁静，羊家安全地活着……他的所有问题都解决了！但是……但是……
